A popular modern choice for X1/9 owners in Australia. While the original manual recommends a 15W/40 or SAE 40 for temperatures above 35°C, this 10W-40 semi-synthetic improves on that spec by providing faster oil flow to the overhead cam during cold starts (10W), while maintaining the necessary protection at operating temperature (40). Its unique "clinging" molecules provide protection for the X1/9's flat-tappet camshaft during the critical warm-up period. Best suited to standard camshaft engines driven regularly — if you have a high-lift racing cam, consider a 1100+ ppm oil instead.

Premium mineral with high Zinc, designed for 1950–1989 vehicles. Contains a "Tacky Additive" that clings to cam lobes during storage, preventing the dry-start wear that causes most camshaft damage in classic cars. Built-in corrosion inhibitors protect against internal condensation. Seal-safe for original rubber and paper gaskets.

100% PAO & Ester full synthetic with extremely high Zinc (2200+ ppm). Ester molecules cling to metal surfaces for instant protection at start-up. "Shear Free" formulation eliminates viscosity loss under extreme conditions. Not recommended for engines with original 40-year-old seals — the synthetic base can dissolve old rubber and paper gaskets.

Why Oil Choice Matters for the X1/9

The X1/9's SOHC engine uses a flat-tappet camshaft — a design where the cam lobes slide directly against the lifters. This metal-on-metal contact requires high levels of Zinc (ZDDP) in the oil to prevent premature wear. Modern oils have significantly reduced their Zinc content to protect catalytic converters in newer cars, which makes them a poor choice for our engines.

The factory manual specifies 15W-40 (Oliofiat Multigrado), and that remains the correct baseline. In Australian conditions a slightly heavier hot-viscosity is acceptable, but seal compatibility matters just as much as zinc levels — full synthetic PAO/Ester oils can dissolve old rubber and paper gaskets, causing leaks in engines that haven't been rebuilt with modern seals.

Everyday Alternative

Penrite Semi Synthetic 15W-40

  • High-quality semi synthetic blend
  • Full Zinc content — ~1000 ppm ZDDP, safe and effective for street use
  • Matches the original factory-specified viscosity exactly
  • Widely available and excellent value
Best for: Fuel-injected models with a catalytic converter, or daily drivers wanting a good-value oil that matches the factory viscosity spec.
Track / Rebuilt Engines

Penrite 10 Tenths Racing 15 (15W-50)

  • 100% PAO & Ester full synthetic
  • Extremely high Zinc — 2200+ ppm ZDDP
  • Ester molecules cling to metal surfaces for instant protection at start-up
  • 15W-50 — thicker than the factory 15W-40 spec when hot
Best for: Track days, hill climbs, modified engines, or freshly rebuilt engines with new seals. Not recommended for original unrestored engines.

⚠ Carburettor vs. Fuel Injection — Oil Choice is Not the Same

Carburetted Models (1978–1983 in Australia)

No catalytic converter — use high-zinc oils (1200–1500+ ppm ZDDP) for maximum camshaft protection. The Penrite Classic Light 20W-60 is the best match. Carburetted engines are prone to fuel dilution from rich running, so change oil every 5,000 km or 6 months. The thicker viscosity (20W-60) compensates for fuel thinning the oil.

Fuel-Injected Models (1988+ in Australia, Bosch L-Jetronic)

If your X1/9 retains its catalytic converter, do not use high-zinc oils above 1200 ppm — the phosphorus in ZDDP creates ash that coats and eventually destroys the cat. Use a quality 10W-40 or 15W-40 semi-synthetic with moderate zinc (800–1000 ppm). The Penrite Semi Synthetic 15W-40 listed above is a good match. If your cat has been removed or replaced with a free-flow exhaust, this restriction doesn't apply.

Full synthetics and old seals: PAO and Ester-based oils are powerful cleaners. In an engine with 40-year-old seals and internal carbon build-up, they can "scrub" away material that was actually helping old gaskets stay sealed — leading to oil leaks from the cam cover, oil pan, and rear main seal. If your X1/9 has original or aged seals, a mineral or semi-synthetic oil is the safer choice.
Avoid modern thin oils (5W-30, 0W-20, etc.): These are designed for modern engines with tight tolerances. The factory manual specifies 15W-40 — a 30-weight oil is significantly thinner when hot and can lead to low oil pressure and insufficient film strength on the cam lobes in the X1/9's hot engine bay. Any oil used should have a minimum 1000 ppm Zinc (ZDDP) for adequate flat-tappet protection.
